Generation of computer 1st to 5th – (2021 Update)

Today, In this post we will talk about the generation of computers 1st to 5th. Here you are going to know in detail about the history of computers i.e. the story from the first generation of computers till now.

So let us understand this development journey of computers from the beginning till now.

Generation of computer 1st to 5th – (2021 Update)

First Generation of Computer:

The first generation of computers is believed to date from 1930–1956. It was the era of World War which gave shape to the computer concept.

That is, the world’s first computer (INIAC) was created in this period. All the computers of this time were early, equivalent in size to a large room.

Vacuum Tube was used in these first generation computers which were similar to a light bulb. This acted as a signal amplifier.

Vacuum tubes acted like a switch to stop the flow of electricity. Due to high power consumption, these computers used to get very hot.

Therefore, they were kept in air-conditioned rooms to keep them cool. Only machine language was used in them. These computers were very expensive.

Second Generation of Computer:

The second generation of computers is believed to date back to 1959– 1965. In this era, transistors were invented that were much more powerful and faster than vacuum tubes. Because of this, these later computers became even more powerful in terms of processing and input-output.

The size of these computers was slightly smaller than the first generation computers. Now these computers were not very hot.

In this generation of computers, magnetic cores were used as primary memory, and megnetic disk and magnetic tap for secondary memory.

During this time programming languages were used in computers such as assembly language and high level languages like FORTRON and COBOL.

Third Generation of Computer:

The third generation of computers is considered to be from 1965 to 1971. Computers of this era became even smaller and faster than before because now ICs (Integrated Circuit) were being replaced instead of transistors.

An IC has the strength of several transistors and capacitors. All these ICs were installed on a circuit board which came to be called mother board.

The DEC PDP and IBM 360 series computers have been the most prominent competitors of this era. Third generation computers used high level language such as C, Pascal, COBOL and FORTRAN.

Fourth Generation of Computer:

The period from 1971 to 1980 was actually the period of the computer revolution. This was the time when the form of personal computer which we also called micro computer came out.

By this time, VLSI (Very Large Scale Integrated Circuit) was started in place of IC in computers. VLSI reduced the size of computers so much that computers could now be easily placed on a table.

Now computers started to be much cheaper than before, due to which these microcomputers reached the door to door. Now computers are used in almost every kind of work, because now multiple tasks are being done simultaneously in the computer.

Along with this, the work of time sharing, real time network, and distributing operating system also became easier through these computers. Used high level programming languages like C and C ++. Now Internet is also being used by computer.

Prior to this era, all computers were CUI (Character User Interface) based, meaning only text appeared on the screen in those computers.

But in fourth generation computers, GUI (Graphical User Interface) technology was used which was based on graphics. That is, all the types of menus, graphix and images that we see on computer screens today started in the computers of this period.
Due to GUI, mouse is now being used in computers. Apple I and II series, ALTAIR 8800, IBM PC were the most popular computers of this era.

Fifth Generation of Computer:

These are considered to be present and future computers. Now VLSI was replaced by ULSI (Ultra Large Scale Integration) technology. With this, now the form of Microprocessor Chip has emerged which is currently used in all computers.

Computers of this era have become millions of times faster and reliable than before, which is undergoing rapid changes here.

Now these computers have become very small in size as well as being cheap and due to this, many forms of computers are being seen such as Mini Computer, Palm Top Computer, Laptop, Digital Notebook, Ultrabook, Chromebook, Robots etc.

In the coming period, AI (Artificial Intelligence) technology based computers will develop rapidly, due to which the ability of computers to think and make decisions will also increase.

Currently research has also started on future computers i.e. Quantum Computer, which will change the world of computers completely. These computers will also be able to do the tasks that even today’s super computers cannot do.
